Abstract The illnesses of two patients with characteristic symptoms of subacute carbon monoxide poisoning were misdiagnosed initially. This resulted in the needless exposure of one patient and two relatives to a toxic environment. The cherry-red color of the skin commonly cited in the literature was absent in both patients. The carbon monoxide poisoning probably contributed to the myocardial infarction and pulmonary emboli seen in these patients. Vague flu-like illnesses should raise the suspicion of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Relation between brain temperature and white matter damage in subacute carbon monoxide poisoning

In the previous studies, carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning showed an imbalance between cerebral perfusion and metabolism in the acute phase and the brain temperature (BT) in these patients remained abnormally high from the acute to the subacute phase. As observed in chronic ischemic patients, BT can continuously remain high depending on impairments of cerebral blood flow and metabolism; this is be...

Carbon monoxide poisoning: neurologic aspects

Carbon monoxide can produce several nonspecific symptoms and can mimic several diseases. Most of the signs and symptoms are due to hypoxia, which affects mainly the brain. The most significant neurologic and psychiatric manifestations of carbon monoxide poisoning are seen as subacute or late sequelae, often following a period of complete recovery from an acute episode. There is a possible inter...

End-tidal Carbon Dioxide Measurements in Unintentional Non-Fire-Related Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Background: Poisoning with carbon monoxide occurs occasionally worldwide, and the gold diagnostic standard is to measure carboxyhemoglobin level in the blood. This study investigated the correlation between carboxyhemoglobin and the end-tidal carbon dioxide levels in 50 patients with carbon monoxide poisoning. Methods: We recruited 50 volunteer patients who had been admitted to the Emergency S...

Carbon monoxide poisoning and treatment with hyperbaric oxygen in the subacute phase.

The use of normobaric versus hyperbaric (>2 atm) oxygen in the treatment of carbon monoxide intoxication continues to be a matter of debate despite reports of increased efficacy with hyperbaric oxygen. When hyperbaric oxygen is used, immediate treatment is preferred for best results. The therapeutic window of time, however, is unknown. A patient presented with acute confusion and partial retrog...
